Your Summer Programmable Thermostat Schedule

While your furnace and air conditioner may be the heart of your home’s HVAC system, your thermostat acts as the brain. It communicates with the components of your HVAC system, telling your furnace, air conditioner, and sometimes even your indoor air quality equipment when to turn on and shut off. One of the best features offered for thermostats is them being programmable, and setting a programmable thermostat schedule. Way back when, in the summer for example, you had to make a choice when leaving the house for work: Do I keep my air conditioner running at a low temperature so it’s cool when I get home and pay for the energy costs, or do I turn my thermostat up and keep my home at a higher temp for when I get home and save on utility costs? Now, with a programmable thermostat, you get the best of both worlds!

For the summer months, this is the programmable thermostat schedule we recommend using:

Programmable Thermostat Schedule- When You Wake Up: Program your air conditioner to run at your desired comfort temperature around the time you normally wake up.

Programmable Thermostat Schedule- When You Leave for Work: If the house is empty, we recommend programming your thermostat to go up to around 80 degrees around the time you leave your home each morning. Do take into consideration if others will be at home during the day, especially pets, and adjust to their comfort as needed.

Programmable Thermostat Schedule- About an Hour Before Your Anticipated Arrival Time Home: Program your thermostat to begin to cool to your desired temperature about an hour before you expect to arrive home. This way, by the time you arrive home, it should be cool inside.

Programmable Thermostat Schedule- When You Get Ready for Bed: This is going to be your personal preference. Some people like it really cool in their home when they sleep. If that’s the case, we recommend programming your thermostat’s temperature down a few degrees for when you’re sleeping. If you don’t mind it being slightly warmer while you sleep, then program your thermostat’s temperature to go up a few degrees while you’re sleeping.

When it comes down to it, it all comes down to preference, as you should pick the programmable thermostat schedule that best fits you!

DIY Air Conditioner Start Up Tips for your Home

With summer quickly approaching, it’s time to get your Air Conditioner ready for the upcoming cooling season. While the absolute best thing you can do to get your Air Conditioner summer-ready is by scheduling a 22-Point Certified Cleaning, Tune-Up and Inspection, there are a few things you can do on your own! We’ve compiled a list of a few DIY Air Conditioner Start-Up Tips for you to keep in mind as the outside weather is getting warmer:

DIY Air Conditioner Start Up Tip #1: Make Sure Your Thermostat is On Cooling Mode– It sounds simple, but you would be surprised how many people think their Air Conditioner isn’t working when, in actuality, their thermostat is still on heat mode.

DIY Air Conditioner Start Up Tip #2: Clear Any Air Blockage– Make sure that your Air Conditioner itself isn’t having any air flow obstruction. There should be at least a foot or 2 of cleared space around your unit. Additionally, in your home, make sure that none of your vents are being blocked by rugs, furniture, or other items. Air flow obstruction can be the cause of several potential HVAC system problems. Also, make sure that your events are actually opened as well.

DIY Air Conditioner Start Up Tip #3:  Replace Your Furnace Filter– While this relates to air blockage, replacing your furnace filter is so important we’ve listed it as a separate tip all in itself. Ensure that your HVAC system isn’t being blocked by anything. For the average home, we recommend replacing your furnace filter at least once a month.

DIY Air Conditioner Start Up Tip #4: Air Conditioner Repairs Are Not DIY– It’s important that if you are experiencing any problems with your Air Conditioner that you contact a licensed HVAC contractor to fix it. Not only do self-done repairs require intensive knowledge and skill to complete, you can also void any warranties on your equipment and/or the individual part by installing it yourself.

Make sure to keep these tips in mind as you turn on your Air Conditioner for the start of Cooling Season! Additionally, if you are interested in scheduling your 22-Point Certified Air Conditioner Tune-Up, Cleaning  and Inspection to contact our office at (630) 548-1500 to schedule your appointment!

Take Advantage of High Efficiency Air Conditioner Rebates Through ComEd

Just as the month of April is gearing up for the start of summer, everyone is gearing up for the start of cooling season and Air Conditioner start-ups. If you’ve been contemplating replacing your air conditioner, it can be a daunting task because an Air Conditioner replacement is a sizable expense for your household. However, there are programs put into place that could help reduce the cost of your air conditioner install, and if you are a ComEd customer, you may find that you’re eligible for a High Efficiency Air Conditioner Rebate.

Right now, ComEd’s current rebate program allows customers to receive a $300 Air Conditioner Rebate for a unit that is rated at 14.5 SEER or greater and is installed by a licensed HVAC contractor. Additionally, if you install a programmable or Smart Thermostat, there are rebates available for that as well. For customers looking to install a new programmable thermostat, Nicor offers a $20 rebate. For customers looking to install a Smart Thermostat, such as an eecobee3, Nest Learning Thermostat, or Honeywell Lyric, ComEd offers a $125 rebate when your thermostat is installed through an licensed HVAC contractor. For complete details on these rebate programs, we urge you to check out the ComEd Rebate Page and Nicor Rebate page for complete details on Air Conditioner Rebates and Thermostat Rebates.

Please check with ComEd to make sure that your account is directly through them and to ensure you qualify for any rebates, as Nortek or any other HVAC company will not have access to this information. If your home’s electric is directed through another company, you may not be eligible for these rebates. It is extremely important to confirm your rebate eligibility status before you install a new air conditioner in your home.

For more information about which Air Conditioners Nortek offers that qualify for a ComEd Air Conditioner Rebate, please contact our office at (630) 548-1500 for further details and to set up your Energy Savings Consultation! We would be more than happy to discuss what options are available to you when choosing an Air Conditioner for your home and to compare pricing that takes your potential rebate eligibility into effect.

Hurry though, ComEd’s current rebate period ends on May 31st, 2016 and there is no information yet on what the next program year will include!

The Juvenile Diabetes No Limits Foundation’s mission is to educate children, teenagers and young adults who are living with Type 1 Diabetes, also known as Juvenile Diabetes, on how they can live an active and healthy lifestyle while maintaining their diabetes. It becomes much more difficult to maintain an active lifestyle while living with Type 1 Diabetes as one needs to be entirely in control of their diabetes to minimize the possibility of complications. One of the flagship programs that the Juvenile Diabetes No Limits Foundation implements is Check B4U Drive event, where teenagers with Juvenile Diabetes are educated on effective diabetes management and advanced driving skills during a 1-day workshop.

If you want to learn more information regarding the Juvenile Diabetes No Limits Foundation, we encourage you to check out their website here.
